Ooty was once a tribal land occupied by tribes called toda along with the other tribes . The major tribes occupied ooty are toda , irula , kurumba coexisting through specialisation and trade . It is also well known as udhagamandalam , nowadays famous tourist spot for local and foreign people in summer . The lowest record temperature here is -2 deg celsius in dec , jan and having a peak record of 25 deg celsius in apr , may months . The town had population of 88,430 lives . Nilagiri mountain railway : British build the nilagiri mountain railway in 1908 . It was initially operated by madras railway company . It is still running under the steam . In 2005 , UNESCO added nilagiri mountain railway as an extinction to the world hertage site of darjeeling himalayan railways .
